my top ten favorite songs from musicals

(note: not officially back from hiatus, but I have been writing up some posts. I’m hoping to be fully back in the next couple of weeks, depending on the path my mental health and stress levels take in that time. 🙂 thanks for being patient with me! <3)

As most of you probably know, I absolutely adore musicals. I have since I was little, and I’m pretty sure I always will. While I love a wide variety of songs from musicals, there are some that I will always come back to and listen on repeat over and over again, more so than others. So for today’s post, I thought I’d share some of my favorite songs from musicals with you! For simplicity’s sake, I’m not going to be counting favorites from Disney movies (unless they’re Disney Broadway musicals) (and even though I really want to!), but if you enjoy this post (or if I enjoy writing it), I’ll do a post with Disney songs and maybe my top ten favorite songs of all time! Let me know in the comments what you think about that. 😉

10. All You Wanna Do from Six: The Musical

This song just breaks my heart. It may not be the most appropriate song, but it is historical, and it’s so sad to me. Katherine Howard was my around my age when she married Henry VIII, and consequently, just a little older than me when she was beheaded. I love to watch videos of this song, because each actress interprets it differently, but they all still manage to convey the darkness and sorrow of it in some way (at least to my eye.)

9. Defying Gravity from Wicked

I’m surprised that this isn’t higher up on my list, but apparently it isn’t. I absolutely adore this song, though. It gives such a positive and powerful message, and when I sing it, I definitely feel like I’m defying gravity. I think maybe the reason this song isn’t higher up on my list is because I have to be in the right mood to sing it or listen to it.

8. Monster from Frozen: The Broadway Musical

I really wish this song was in the Frozen movie. It shows such a deep and sad side to Elsa, but also showcases her courageous side. If you haven’t listened to this song and you’re a Disney fan (or even if you’re not), I would definitely recommend giving it a listen.

7. Seize the Day from Newsies

Again, I’m surprised that this isn’t higher on my list. This is my favorite song for strike. (Theatre speak for after show clean-up.) Probably because there’s literally a section that goes “strike! strike! strike!” and also because it gives me a lot of energy and makes me feel like dancing and getting stuff done.

6. Astonishing from Little Women: The Musical

Having played Jo, every time I sing this, I feel such deep emotions. I really want to play Jo in the musical someday. When I’m deep enough in character, this song literally makes me tremble and brings tears to my eyes. It’s an incredible feeling. And it’s such a sad yet inspiring song. Poor Jo needs a hug.

5. Some Things are Meant to Be from Little Women: The Musical

Another Little Women song. This is originally a duet between Jo and Beth, but I sing it as a solo as Beth. This song happens to be Beth’s dying song, so naturally, it’s heartbreaking. It makes me cry every single time, even when I’m performing it on stage (which isn’t great XD). It’s my absolute favorite audition song, even though it makes me cry.

4. She Used to Be Mine from Waitress

Waitress is not the cleanest musical if you know the whole story, but I adore a lot of the songs from it. She Used to Be Mine reminds me of one of my characters from my novel (her name just so happens to be Jenna like the main character of Waitress), and it’s a song that has a lot of acting potential.

3. Requiem from Dear Evan Hansen

*sobs* This song is so sad. It makes me sad for Zoe, for Larry, for Cynthia, and especially for Connor. But I won’t go into depth here because I’m planning on writing a couple of DEH related posts to celebrate the release of Dear Evan Hansen: The Movie.

2. Waving Through A Window from Dear Evan Hansen

I very nearly put this in first place. In fact, I’d say that first place and second place are really just interchangeable, I love them so much. Waving Through A Window perfectly describes my life with anxiety. I love Dear Evan Hansen because I relate to Evan so much, and so naturally this song fits me and has to be one of my top favorites.

1. Only Us From Dear Evan Hansen

Yes, another DEH song. What can I say? It’s probably my top favorite musical (maybe I should do a post on my top ten favorite musicals?). Evan’s part in Dear Evan Hansen is how I feel about all my friendships, and when I enter a relationship, I have a feeling that that’s how I feel. I would really love to sing a gender-swapped version of this at my wedding (assuming I ever get married.)

Gosh, this was a hard post to write. I wanted to include songs from my other favorite musicals, like Come From Away, but I just couldn’t fit them in, even though they really are some of my favorites!

Here are some of the songs I couldn’t squeeze in, just so I feel better about it XD:

The Phantom of The Opera from The Phantom of The Opera

Welcome to the Rock from Come From Away

Blankets and Bedding from Come From Away

Six from Six: The Musical

Helpless from Hamilton

And many, many more. *sigh* If I kept adding them, we’d be here for days. I guess I really will have to do more song posts, won’t I? 😉

what’s your favorite musical? favorite song from a musical? should I do more musical and song related posts?

    1. Yes, you need to see it, or at least listen to it… it’s so sad, but so good. I might be seeing the movie on Saturday, so I’ll let you know if it’s any good. Though they did cut some songs from it, so the musical is probably the best way to go. 🙂 It’s coming here in January, but since the theatre is requiring vaccines, we’re not going.

  1. I love this post! Almost all of my favorite songs (actually, pretty much the only music I listen to) are from musicals. I love Dear Evan Hansen, but I’d have to say that Only Us wouldn’t go in my top list. I would probably say from Dear Evan Hansen, I like So Big/So Small, then Requiem, then Waving Through a Window best.
Yes!!! Little Women!!! Some Things Are Meant To Be is one of my favorite songs ever! I saw this one live a year and a half ago and the Jo had an incredible voice.
I think I need to steal this idea for my blog.
    Have a great day!

    1. Oh, same here. I listen to maybe ten other songs that aren’t from musicals. XD Maybe less. Yeah, those are all good ones. I had a really hard time choosing between Only Us and Waving Through a Window, and like I said, I think I like them both equally and just chose one randomly for second and first. 🙂
Oh my goodness, that sounds amazing. I hope to see it live one day (or be in it!)
Go right ahead, I would love to see it!!
      You too! 🙂

  2. Yessssss DEH is so good!! I want to watch the movie so bad but….parents 😑 My favorite song is “You Will Be Found” because….I mean… could you not love it? I’ll have to add some of these to my ever-growing list of musicals to listen to. Six is one of my favorites just because the feel of the songs is so different than a lot of Broadway musicals. I haven’t listened to the whole musical yet, just the songs that came on my Broadway Pandora station, but my favorite so far is probably “Haus of Holbein”. It’s so bizarre and the rhymes are clever.

    1. Yeah, to be honest, I was skeptical about the movie, but I read a review of it and I think the content is okay, which is why I’m going to watch it as soon as I can. I think I’ll post my own review here, too… cause why not? XD You Will Be Found is a wonderful song, but as a person with mental illness, I have a really hard time believing it, which is why it didn’t make my list of favorites. It’s still a good one, though! 🙂
Yesss, that’s why I love Six, too. I’ve watched a couple of videos of it on YouTube, and it is hilarious. Haus of Holbein is so bizarre and out of place, but that makes me love it even more. I love Heart of Stone, too. I had a hard time choosing between All You Wanna Do and Heart of Stone to put on this list. But Six is definitely one of my favorite musicals.

      1. Ohh, yeah, I understand. I had anxiety for a short (thankfully) phase of my life, so I get where you’re coming from. I get chills every time it comes on mostly because of the orchestration. Like, how can two songwriters be THAT GOOD??? Oh, yeah, Heart of Stone is really pretty. It almost seems out of place because of the soft tone it has XD Honestly, I love the idea of taking history and putting it with modern references. Six and Hamilton are at the top of my list because of that.

        1. Yeah, it does seem out of place but I think that’s kind of the point. You go from Heart of Stone into Haus of Holbein (I think, maybe I got the order wrong and it’s Get Down next) and it’s hilarious. XD yes, same here!!
